Famous Art Galleries
The UK is home to a number of world renowned art galleries. Many galleries here are based in the capital, London, although an increasing number are appearing in other areas of the country. Many major galleries will give free admission to visitors although some will charge an entry fee and many will charge for special events and displays. Some of the more popular galleries include:
- The Courtauld Gallery - this London gallery combines paintings by famous artists as well as sculptures and other arts.
- The Kelvingrove Art Gallery - based in Glasgow the Kelvingrove holds various collections dedicated to the arts and the natural world.
- The National Gallery, Edinburgh - this gallery is linked via a walkway with the Royal Scottish Academy and has various collections on offer.
- The National Gallery, London - this gallery permanently shows a range of Western European paintings from the 1200s up to around the 1900s. It includes works by many famous artists including Monet, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Leonardo Da Vinci and Turner.
- The National Portrait Gallery - based in London this is the largest gallery dedicated to portraits in the world.
- The Queen's Gallery - based in London's Buckingham Palace this gallery shows pictures from the Queen's collections.
- The Royal Academy - the Royal Academy in London is the oldest arts institution in the country. It contains permanent displays from current and past members including Reynolds, Turner and Constable, various temporary exhibitions and a famous summer exhibition.
- The Saatchi Gallery - the Saatchi gallery in London was established to showcase the art of young contemporary artists.
- The Tate Galleries - there are two Tate galleries in London (Tate Britain and Tate Modern), one in St Ives (Tate St Ives) and one in Liverpool (Tate Liverpool).
- Tate Britain contains British art from various centuries through to the modern day.
- Tate Modern contains examples of international modern art since 1900.
- Tate St Ives is based in the Cornish town and displays modern pieces that often have local connections. The museum also runs the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Gallery in the town.
- Tate Liverpool is home to the National Collection of Modern Art for the North of England.
- Tate Britain contains British art from various centuries through to the modern day.
